I’m heading into WCCP Sunday for the first time. We will do some walleye and lake trout fishing. What are some lures and techniques we should try? We will be traveling from Haven to Mexican Hat and day tripping in the area. Thank you, Sean
I have fished that area a couple of times WCPP a bunch. I always bring too much tackle and end up using a white jig with a jig head of any color I have of the appropriate weight. Make sure to fish any waterfalls. You can't miss. Enjoy!
If the water is fairly clear, white jig, if the water is tea stained, yellow. Go to the end of the lake where the wind has blown the dead bugs in the late afternoon. They'll be feeding near the surface. Ba-bam! Waterfalls and pools ends of rapids, ba-bam!
Do you have a locator along? If so look for the deep water with the bait fish schools. I will focus on more of the open water methods, because I think the shoreline methods will get covered pretty thoroughly.
For Lake Trout if I don't have a locator I try to follow the shoreline terrain with what looks like the steepest drops into the lake and fish off of those edges, I kind of visually extend the shoreline terrain in my minds eye into the lake. I like to use a bucktail jig, after my last trip I really like the Trokar bucktail jig it really outperformed my standard darter jigs for hook ups etc... I usually have some white/ all white, pink and white etc... They really hook up and have sharp hooks. I only brought a couple along and ran out fast after getting a couple snagged and had to go back to my standard darter jigs and realized the difference. I will have more next time.
Another thing I like for vertical jigging bait fish schools are things like Moonshine Shiver Minnows, I like them because they don't have a front hook to get snagged up like the jigging raps or other similar baits do when snap jigging the bottom. The other lures I like are the Lures like the Zip or Sonar jigging lures.
All of the above methods work for Walleye, Trout, or Pike over open water if you can find the baitfish schools. You can pick a shoreline and let the wind or breeze be your trolling motor.
I like to fish open water, I think those fish don't get fished as often or as hard as the shoreline fish.
