Sounds like your first solo went well. For some reason, I don't know why, I always thought of the Slim Lake area as low and swampy, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
I like the drive up Rt. 2 north from Two Harbors. I usually stop at the Pines rest area.

Andy,
Congrats on a successful 1ST solo. Your video's were enjoyable and capture the BWCA nicely. You have a easy listening narrators voice and Camp Andy looked like a very nice place to spend a few days.
Thanks,
Boppa

Andy been there many times you even set up where I always do. It's shame about the fire grate.
As far as the fishing there is a bay straight across from the put in that has depth and Walleye. It's near the other camp site .
Glad you had a good time. I love that lake cause you can bring a few xtras.
Hope to see you guys at wing night.

Nice trip report - really enjoyed the videos. This is an area that we have never been to and that I might like to explore. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Thanks for a great Trip Report Andy! I am glad it went well. I heard you had been in town and I missed you by one day in Ely. I was driving to my EP 16 entry at 6:30am on August 2 and thought about you on Slim as I drove by the North Arm Road in the rain drops.
What did TGO say you did wrong as far as fishing? Were his leeches the problem?
Congratulations to you and your wife on your daughters wedding.
Is your wife thinking about doing a solo now after hearing how well it went? If she can endure the weather conditions at 2011 Spring Wingnite she may be ready.

Nice trip report - thanks for taking the time to share your story & videos.
Was good to hear I'm not the only one who has to deal with a headwind in both directions! ;-} Glad things worked out well and you had a good trip. Plans for the next solo yet???

If you ever want to by pass Two Harbors traffic when using Co Hwy 2, you can take Co Hwy 26. When going south, it is the road on the right side between the fire department and the auto collision center. That road loops around and takes you past the Super One grocery store to the intersection at Hwy 61 by the McDonalds.

Andy,
I am so PROUD of you and Marsha! Thank You Marsha for being understanding! Andy, I loved the report and Video. I can relate.
The Hashbrowns rock, don't they! you can only appreciate a woodpile like that if you go do it yourself. I always had trouble sleepin, vision's of those pesky bears.
Anyway, let's do a group solo? what do you think of that Idea?
Happy Paddlin and Proud of You!

Thanks to all of you for the positive comments. As you can tell from the report, I truly enjoyed every moment. I would do another solo in a NYC minute. Having complete "me time" while doing something you love was an incredible experience. However, I would enjoy doing a group, or group solo trip with any & all of you, anytime, anywhere.
And yes, Marsha is a saint. I'm still hoping someday she will agree to a BW canoe trip with me.

Your report brings back memories. I took the B's to Slim for their first BW experience. At that time I was renting the 23 foot MN 4 so I welcomed the thought of only one portage. We stayed on the site closest to the nasty rock portage into rice. The girls made friends with a snapping turtle they named Tony. Did you happen to see him. Inquiring girls want to know. LOL.
Someday.................it will be time for me to solo.
You tell Marsha she can come an help me with my gardens if you want to go on another solo. : )

Andy,
Thanks for the trip report. We didn't take many pictures so it was nice to view your videos.
I was surprised the area was so scenic. I hadn't heard much about it until researching an easy route for the granddaughter, but it seems to be well known.
Anyway, your report tells how much you enjoyed soloing and the videos were great.
If your wife needs encouragement, tell her I took my very first canoeing (and outdoor experience) trip when I was 54, to Quetico, no less. I only wish that I had started earlier as there are so many lakes and routes to see.

Congrats on joining the "solo club" :)
solo canoeing is so peaceful - can't wait to hear about your next one!

Congrats on your solo. I'm looking forward to doing one myself someday. Thanks for the videos.

Loved the videos Andy. I took my wife to Slim for her first trip and stayed at that same site. Matter of fact our camp looked exactly like yours! Same tent pad and same spot we strung our tarp. Thanks for the memory jog!

Thanks again for the additioal comments. It is good to hear I revived some fond memories for some of you.
Kendra, I didn't see Tony, but did spot one of his offspring, about silver dollar sized, swiming about in the Rice Lake landing. It was there when I landed, and when I left. Cute little fellow.

Nice job Andy, I like how you make the getting there and return home part of your trip. I was to Slim once with a friend named Andy :)... We stayed on Hook Lake. I think it was September that year and not a lot of traffic.
