After permits become available at the end of January, if you book a permit and have to cancel it, let others know in this thread that this is happening so they can potentially get the permit they really wanted.

Anyone know if the cancelled permits are released into the pool immediately or if they are released at a later or randomized time? I thought there was some discussion last year that USFS was either using or contemplating using a randomized, later release time to forestall some kind of collusion.

I'm pretty sure they are released back into the pool and it almost immediately goes back up onto the recreation.gov site as available. I had to cancel one last summer, and it made it back onto the Rec.gov site immediately and was grabbed by someone.

I tried to get a June 19 permit for EP 16 (Moose Portage/River (north)) and was shut out. Got the last one on June 20. Shortly after most of the permits were gone for EP 16. If anyone thinks they want to drop one for June 19 for EP 16 please let me know! I don't want to cut the trip short a day unless we have to!

It doesn't seem consistent either from what I have observed. Now, there might be a difference between "I hit the return button" and the "time out." Once I accidently grabbed the permit without being logged in. But then the permit was gone when I logged in because it was sitting in the "guest" cart. My mistake. Should have been 15 minutes and then it would time out. That permit didn't resurface for almost 14 hours and I ultimately did get it back.

Just canceled a permit for Homer, May 27th, the Saturday of Memorial Weekend. Had wanted Baker and missed it, booked Homer in a panic. But I think we'll head up the Gunflint instead. Just canceled it now, Monday Jan 30th, 7:45 am.

New permit alert feature in beta. Still working out a few kinks, but there are plenty of permits that were sold out that are coming available sporadically as they are canceled by groups.

Twopaddle: "Canceling a permit (at 2:20 pm) for Thursday, June 15th for entry at Lizz & Swamp."
This permit didn't show up until 7am this morning in the system. Interested to know if that is when you released it or if it took that long?

I cancelled the June 15th permit for Lizz & Swamp on April 12th at 2:20 pm as I posted. I wanted to let others know exactly when it was cancelled. Interesting that it took until the next morning to show in the system. Wonder if that is the normal timing - overnight and available in the system at 7:00 the next day?

I cancelled my June 14th Hog Creek permit and it is showing now on the site. (I switched to one a few days later since I signed up for a canoe marathon in early June and thought I might need more recovery time :)

A brief update that someone release a permit at 6:49AM CST yesterday morning for July 27th Sawbill. The permit alert showed up at just after 4 am CST this morning.
This permit almost took 24 hours to show back up in the system.

I may need to cancel Stuart River (#19) for June 28th. Potential work schedule adjustment. I will hold on for a few more days hoping I don’t need to push back a week or so but it’s looking like I can’t get loose until the 30th. Email me if you’re interested and we will coordinate the cancel time so you can grab it.

My outfitter told me that once a trip permit is cancelled, it does not go back into the rotation for a few days. This is to prevent a traveler from cancelling the permit and allowing a buddy to pick it up right away. It apparently makes it more fair for everyone.

Just cancelled a permit for EP Brule Lake for Wednesday 9/6/23. Hope somebody can use it! I simply wasn't planning on buying a new house as quickly as it all went through, and I am swamped with moving and all.

Just canceled Sawbill EP for this Sunday the 10th. As well as a Sawbill campsite for the 9th. Hopefully this will help you.
I am real bummed as I had three trips planned for this year and have had to cancel all three.
Sigh.......
