Just heard this news on the radio. a prescribed fire by Tofte got out of its' boundaries.... the Fry Fire.

I heard about this yesterday but didn't want to start a thread so was hoping someone else would. It is near the Little Isabella River Campground. (Isabella)

My old fire district, I ran the fire engine out or Isabella for 4 years, they will get containment on this soon with the current weather/rain.

At 1:00pm on May 15, 2024 the Superior National Forest (SNF) declared a wildfire on the Tofte Ranger District. The Fry Fire spotted within the prescribed fire project area, beyond the planned burn area and was suppressed with aircraft and ground resources. Water dropping aircraft were effective on May 15 and ground crews were able to work on the fire in the evening. Protecting values at risk, safely and effectively is the priority.

Crews are engaged on the fire again on May 16, 2024, and working to secure the fire edge. Light rain fell over the fire area overnight and continues to fall. A .10 inch of rain has been received so far.

I am glad they are doing prescribed burns.

I was going from Sawbill to Wine on Sunday the 12th and it was quite hazy with smoke and on Zenith in particular it was not fun to breath.

Crews continued to fight a wildfire, now covering more than 200 acres, Thursday in an area of the Superior National Forest northwest of Isabella, Minn.

On Wednesday, the forest officials reported the fire outside a prescribed burn area north of Hwy. 1. In an update on the fire Thursday morning, the Forest Service said in a news release that the "spot fire" began within the controlled burn area in the 72-acre Fry Unit, which is near Little Isabella River Campground and east of Fish Fry Lake.

The Fry Fire was 209 acres Thursday afternoon and currently is completely uncontained. No structures are threatened, according to the agency.

Aircraft dumped water on the fire Wednesday, with support from ground crews. Weather conditions, including light rain and cloud cover, have helped, the Forest Service added.
The agency has several planned prescribed burns this spring to reduce dangerous fuel loads, some created by factors like spruce budworm, which has killed off balsam firs. Crews burned 159 acres beginning Wednesday in the Slim Lake South Unit northwest of Ely and Burntside Lake and partly within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Crews recently finished a 390-acre burn off the Gunflint Trail.

Sunday there was smoke to Brainerd from British Columbia fires.

This fire is not moving today. The fire area has received rain and firefighters are actively working the fire edge. There are no evacuations. A new update has just been posted on the Superior NF Facebook page. The fire is 75% contained.

Talked to the FS crew in the Little Isabella campground Thursday. They had hoses from the river to the road and were ready to burn. Went to Ely Sunday and the hoses were still out. I have no clue how this burn could of went bad. Saturday, I had a hard time finding dry wood for shore lunch. After the Pagami and Greenwood fires the locals live in fear of ishkode!!

It's fully contained now. Total burned acreage has been revised downward to about 180 acres.

WE need a LOT more prescribed burning up here to deal with all the budworm-killed balsams. Burn it under controlled conditions or nature will do it on her own terms.

Forest fires and other blazes in the United States release about 30 percent as much mercury as the nation's industrial sources, according to a new study by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)in Boulder, Colo.

More lake in Minnesota then I can count with so much mercury in them that the fish are dangerous to eat. That's more environmental damage then mining could ever do.

There is virtually NO market for balsam fir, and most of it starts rotting long before it gets cut. Lake county had a couple of timber sales near my house that did not get bid on, and the ones that did didn't get cut until the balsam were dead and falling down. They were only able to use the aspen, birch, and some of the spruce.

balsam and even black spruce market is limited at best. You need multiple methods to manage a forest, one size never fits all.

Unlike the previous post I was not giving my opinion! Read it again. I was saying listen to the locals. City folks and tourist really like to control everyone. I am lucky I don't have to deal with it on a Sovereign Nation. We manage the wildlife and forest far better the uniparty trying to control the world.
